HK/NY HOME
On April 5th Hunter College and Hong Kong Baptist University had a film exchange conference. Both of schools presented some excellent short films to discuss how we see our home. Through those films, I see the same perspectives and the different perspectives. For the same perspective, in the films “Can’t Shake Us” and “Yellowing”, both of them showed that when people get a hard time, how they treated and got over the dilemmas. Even though the situations were different, but both of them were brave to live as what they want. They did not give in to the dilemmas. The films got through the different perspectives to present the same concept. Therefore, film is called “the universal language”. On the other hand, for the different perspectives, in the films “Chula: With Invisible Strings” and “Lucky”, both of them described a person’s life. “Chula: With Invisible Strings” focused on the character’s movement and behavior, and “Lucky” focused on the character’s mental activity. Also, in my opinion, for the film “Chula: With Invisible Strings”, the story was fun at the first part and it was sad at the last part. For the film “Lucky”, the story was sad at the first part and it was a happy and hopeful ending. In here, both of them described one’s life, but the way to shot and the story to develop were opposite. As I watched these great film works, my favorite was “Lucky”. First, I liked the film’s shooting style. For example, at the beginning, there was no cutting in the screen, and at the end of the screen, after the man closed the door and walked away, the camera focused on the notes on the door. That looked amazing. Second, I liked the story which is “first suppress and then raise up”. It’s like the more you felt upset, the more you felt delighted. It gave the audience the warm feeling. It’s a nice story. Third, I liked the idea that a dog inspired a man. Through an animal to inspire a person was an innovative idea. I believed that a lot of people would have the same resonance. That is why the film “Lucky” succeed.
