Artist Statement

       Since I was a kid, I liked many things whether it is domestic or foreign. Such as, music, story, history, art and traveling. My family and I were confused about my future development. I liked them all, it's hard to say which one I liked it more. Until I discovered that film is able to satisfy me. Film included all the things that I like, and it also made those things eternally. Then, I began to have a goal. 
I love film, and I respect film. Film is the teacher of my mind. It affects me all the time. Through films, I see everything. When I was young, there was lack of movies, but as long as there was a movie showed in my hometown, I would be the most positive person in my surrounding. Also, I was the youngest one in the movie theater. As I am growing up, I know that watching film and making film is different. Watching film is watching other people's ideas, but making film is presenting my own ideas. If I want to work in this area, I have to learn. 
In order to learn film, I experienced a tough process. Before I went to five-years college in China, I had a dark period. At that time, film means a dream which will not appear in my life. Because of my illness, I missed the education of high school. I barely have the learning ability. Because of that, my parents sent me to learn teaching which career was good for a girl. However, after a few years teaching in an elementary school, I was upset gradually. Until one day, I finally determined to change myself totally because I don’t want to wither up in this career. I planned to chase my dream, even though there is nobody supporting me. Because I couldn’t change my major to learn film in China, I prepared to go to the U.S. When I finally completed my first goal, being here, then, language became my enemy. As I said, I barely had the learning ability in some way. I have been spending four and half years to get over the language mountain. In fact, now, it’s the half year. I am still climbing. Yes, I am using all of me to chase my dream. 
Being a filmmaker and creating my own film, I am willing to do everything for that. I gave up the high-paying and comfortable work for my dream, I won’t give up film because that’s why I exist. That’s why I am alive. For my dream, I can pay my everything.

The Analysis of the Movie’s Clip

This is a short film clip from the movie “Paths of the Soul” (or “Kang rinpoche”) directed by Yang Zhang. It shows how the pilgrims do their worships. In this clip’s 1 to 43 seconds, there are 10 shots. In the 1 st to 3 rd shot, the director uses the high angle to record the pilgrims. Through the mountains, we can see the people gradually. To link to the 4 th shot, the director used the close-up shot to record the pilgrim’s actions from the ground. In the 5 th shot, the director shows their prayer wheels in a close-up shot because the prayer wheel is the most representative thing for the pilgrims in their religious culture. Next, in the 6 th shot, it’s a shot from the ground which shows every pilgrim doing their worships through the same process.       On April 5th Hunter College and Hong Kong Baptist University had a film exchange conference. Both of schools presented some excellent short films to discuss how we see our home. Through those films, I see the same perspectives and the different perspectives. For the same perspective, in the films “Can’t Shake Us” and “Yellowing”, both of them showed that when people get a hard time, how they treated and got over the dilemmas. Even though the situations were different, but both of them were brave to live as what they want. They did not give in to the dilemmas. The films got through the different perspectives to present the same concept. Therefore, film is called “the universal language”. On the other hand, for the different perspectives, in the films “Chula: With Invisible Strings” and “Lucky”, both of them described a person’s life. “Chula: With Invisible Strings” focused on the character’s movement and behavior, and “Lucky” focused on the character’s mental activi...
